Whether
one sees it as one of the final events of the spring season or the first event
of the summer, attending the Cleveland International Classical Guitar Festival
is always a wonderful way to enjoy the blossoming University Circle while
hearing many of the world’s finest classical guitarists. Beginning on Friday,
June 3 and continuing through Sunday, June 5 at the Cleveland Institute of
Music, the 16th annual festival will offer an impressive line-up of recitals,
premieres, master classes, lectures, and exhibits celebrating the classical
guitar.
Sponsored by Guitars
International in cooperation with the Cleveland Institute of Music, this year’s
four ticketed events will include a
recital by Jason Vieaux performing works by Albéniz, Bach, Bellinati,
Ellington, Ginastera, Giuliani, and Jobim on Friday, June 3 at 7:30.
On Saturday, June 4 at 8:00 pm, the
Italian ensemble SoloDuo will
present “Music from four centuries.” The program will include works by Bach,
Bellini, Debussy, Piazzolla, and Scarlatti.
Performances continue
on Sunday, June 5 at 2:30 pm, when Spanish guitarist Ricardo Gallén plays
works by Fernando Sor and Leo Brouwer. And
at 7:30 pm, Bay Village native Colin Davin will present a concert of music by de Falla, José,
Mompou, Tárrega, Torroba, and Turina.
All above events will
be held in Mixon Hall. Tickets are available online.

The festival will also
include free, informative lectures and demonstrations.
On Friday, June 3 at
6:00 pm in Studio 113, British lutenist Nigel North will present “Baroque Music
on the Guitar: How can lute players help us play in a good style?”
On Saturday, June 4 at
1:15 pm in Studio 113, Canadian guitar maker Joshia de Jonge will demonstrate
“The Art of French Polishing,” and at 5:15 pm in CIM’s Pogue Lobby, Canadian
Tim Beattie will perform on instruments from Guitars International’s Exhibition
of Fine Contemporary Classical Guitars.
Australian guitarist
Simon Powis will present a lecture titled “Opportunities for a 21st Century
Guitarist” on Sunday June 5 at 6:00 pm Studio 113.
