Praised for his “impeccable tone” and performances filled “with passion from the start to the end,” American classical guitarist Dr Jonathan Fitzgerald is quickly gaining international recognition as a performr and pedagogue. Jonathan teaches at the University of Western Australia, and recently completed a residency at the National Trust of Western Australia, funded by a major grant from the Department of Culture and the Arts. The residency culminated in two sold-out concerts at the historic East Perth Cemeteries, featuring a world premiere performance of a work commissioned by the National Trust.

Past highlights have included performances with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, West Australian Opera, radio performances for ABC Radio National, RTRFM, WXXI and WCNY, and solo concerts for the Classical Guitar Society of Western Australia, Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, the Musicales Concert Series, Valley Manor Concert Series, Great Lakes Guitar Society, Buffalo State University, Syracuse University, and Roberts Wesleyan University. His playing has been recognized through numerous awards, including the Great Lakes International Guitar Competition in which he was a prize-winning finalist and winner of the “Audience Choice” award.

A recipient of the Jack L. Frank Award for Excellence in Teaching, Jonathan is a dedicated pedagogue with over a decade of teaching experience at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. Currently Jonathan teaches at the University of Western Australia where he oversees the guitar department, is a sessional lecturer at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, and teaches secondary students at Trinity College. He has previously held faculty positions at Roberts Wesleyan University, the Eastman Community Music School, the Cleveland Music School Settlement, the Fairmount Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, the Ratner School, and Horizon Montessori School. In addition to one-to-one lessons, he has taught The History and Literature of the Guitar, Guitar Pedagogy, Fretboard Harmony, and Guitar Chamber Music to undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral guitar majors at the Eastman School of Music, and Dalcroze Eurhythmics at Horizon Montessori School and the Fairmount Center for the Arts. Also an active clinician, he has presented workshops and masterclasses across the United States and Australia.

Jonathan earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Eastman School of Music, where he studied under the guidance of Dr. Nicholas Goluses and served as his teaching assistant. In addition to guitar studies, he earned an academic minor in Historical Performance Practice with world renowned lutenist and early music specialist Paul O’Dette. Jonathan began musical studies at the age of four in the Preparatory Department at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he stayed to earn Bachelor and Master of Music degrees with classical guitar virtuoso and Grammy Award winner Jason Vieaux.
